The prize is intended to function as funding for travel essential to an artist’s studio practice that an artist may not otherwise be able to afford. Tony was selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants. The tenth annual Municipal Art Society of Baltimore City Artist Travel Prize is managed by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and sponsored by the Municipal Art Society of Baltimore City.

Tony Shore

Tony Shore is a Baltimore artist recognized for his black velvet paintings depicting blue-collar life in the city. According to Shore, “Velvet as a surface has extraordinary, almost magical powers to depict light and a deep, rich black that cannot be attained with traditional paints.” He plans to use the $7,000 prize to travel to Rome, Italy, and Madrid, Spain, to study the works of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Jusepe de Ribera, Diego Velázquez, and Francisco de Zurbarán—artists renowned for their powerful and emotional use of light and dark.
