PROJECT BACKGROUND
Lexington Market hired Baltimore community developer Seawall to build a new market building and plaza for the iconic institution which for more than 200 years has been a staple of Baltimore life and is the longest continuously operating public market in the country. The city-owned market sits in the heart of Baltimore City and has always served as a hub for community, culture, health, and wealth building.
The new Lexington Market building was built on the Market’s existing south parking lot, and the new plaza connects Eutaw and Paca Streets, making historic Lexington Street a walkable, urban green space. Completed in December 2022, the transformed Lexington Market is now home to approximately 50 vendors – and the plaza is a site for countless community gatherings.
LEXINGTON MARKET PUBLIC ART
Jon Constable of Seawall Development reached out to Peter Doo, president of MASB, to explore a collaboration for creating new public artworks for the market. MASB led the artists’ call and selection process that resulted in two large scale, site-specific public artworks that were installed in December 2022 on the plaza of the new market. The talented Baltimore-based artists who created the two new artworks are Oletha DeVane and Christopher Kojzar (Robert and Rosetta) at the Pacca Street entrance and Reed Bmore, Nick Ireys, and Eric Smith (Foodplay) at the Eutaw Street entrance. Along with the new Market building filled with 50+ vendors from all across the city and state, Lexington Market expects these two new public artworks to be on every Baltimoreans’ and tourists’ list of most beloved destinations in the city.
