The Municipal Art Society of Baltimore City is aware of recent discussions in Washington regarding the potential reinstallation of Confederate monuments. We do not support the reinstallation of any Confederate monument in Baltimore even though the MASB was designated by Mr. J. Henry Ferguson in his will as the organization to put together a design competition and oversee the creation of a monument to Lee and Jackson, which it did. Mr. Ferguson left $100,000 for the monument and even designated who should serve on the jury, which chose Laura Gardin Fraser as the artist. While this monument is part of the MASB’s past, we believe public art should reflect the values, diversity, and future of our city. Art and artists are among Baltimore’s greatest assets, and we remain committed to fostering work that positively represents our community today and for generations to come.
